      HISTORICAL NOTE

      At the beginning of each academic year, MSUM hosts an Opening Academic Convocation event that has consisted of a parade of administration, faculty, and student by department. They also feature scholarship award winners and a keynote speaker.

      SCOPE & CONTENT

      The Opening Academic Convocation Papers consist mostly of programs for the convocation event. There are also a small number of announcements and invitations. The miscellaneous file consists mostly of newspaper articles about the convocation ceremonies, but also contains campus papers such as invitation and RSVP cards for faculty.

      The Inter Faculty Organization (IFO) is the statewide faculty union that engages in collective bargaining, contract enforcement, and advocacy for the faculty in all seven state universities with the Minnesota State system.       HISTORICAL NOTE

      The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) is a labor organization dedicated to protect and promote public service employees. Founded in 1932 in Wisconsin, AFSCME is a part of the AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor charter in 1936 and Congress of Industrial Organizations merger in 1955), with over 1.6 million working and retired members.

      The Local 602 Moorhead is a state local of AFSCME Minnesota Council 5. It represents office employees in academic departments, business office, records office, Public Safety officers, all campus general maintenance workers, campus and vehicle scheduling, student cafeteria and café workers, international programs office workers, engineers from the heating plant, campus landscape workers, snow removal workers, electrician, plumbing workers, painters, dormitory maintenance workers, post office, bookstore, workers in marketing, admissions, financial aid, and alumni office workers.

      SCOPE & CONTENT

      The AFSCME Local 602 Records consists mainly of correspondence, general information, reports, newsletters, meeting minutes, and information on the strikes that occurred in 1981 and 2001.

      HISTORICAL NOTE

      Athletics at MSUM began in the late 1890s, early 1900’s with football, baseball, and basketball teams for men. The Concordia College football rivalry began in the late 1920s and continued to 2008. Soon track, tennis, golf, and wrestling gained in popularity. During World War II, the football team was suspended until 1946 due to a lack of athletes and coaches. Post-War athletics suffered because of the frequent changes in coaching staff; however baseball made its best showing during this era. During the 1960s-1980s, the men’s intercollegiate athletics program consisted of 8 sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, track and field, and wrestling. It should be noted that ice hockey made a brief appearance from 1962-1965. By the 1990s, the men’s athletic program decreased to the 5 current sport teams: basketball, cross country, football, and track and field.

      Women’s athletics grew from the intramural sports program operation by the Women’s Physical Education Department and later the Women’s Athletic Association (WAA). Sports offered included field hockey, kickball, soccer, basketball, volleyball, baseball, quoits, archery, tennis, and track. It was not until the federal enactment of Title IX in 1972 that women’s athletics saw change. It required that public institutions receiving federal government funds to give equal opportunity to all students attending the institution. This meant women’s athletics had to be given the same consideration to budgets, facilities, scholarships, and personnel as men’s athletics. During the 1970s, the women’s intercollegiate athletics program consisted of 10 sports: badminton, basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. During the 1980s, badminton, field hockey, and gymnastics were dropped to a lack of interest and added soccer. By the 1990s, the women’s athletics program consisted of the 9 current sport teams: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

      The original sports team name was the Peds, short for Pedegogue, which is Latin for teacher. After the fire of Old Main in 1930, a re-birth for the school came about and led to a new mascot and logo, the Dragons.

      MSUM is a part of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), which dates back to 1932 when it was called the Northern Teachers Athletic Conference. The NSIC is affiliated in NCAA Division II.

      SCOPE & CONTENT

      The Intercollegiate Sports Records consists mainly of factbooks, programs, schedules, media articles, and correspondence of the various sport teams. The records are primarily from the 1970s and on. They are divided into three series:

      • Series I: Sport Subject Files – Arranged in alphabetical order and divided between men’s and women’s with some sports documented better than others.
      • Series II: Scrapbooks – Composed of newspaper clippings, photographs, and thank you cards.
      • Series III: Biographical Files – Housed separately in a filing cabinet, these files contain biographical information and newspaper clippings on athletes mainly from the 1970s and 1980s.
