Transfer Student Orientation, Advising & Registration
Transfer students that are new to Minnesota State Moorhead will register for classes as part of our Student Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR) process. This process can be done fully online or in person to accommodate your unique needs as a transfer student.
When you register, you are indicating your desire to begin the SOAR process and will be asked to log in with your StarID and Password. If you receive a notification “Wrong User name or password. Use your Star Id credentials”, but are able to access other systems (such as e-Services), please wait 12 – 24 hours as your MSUM student email account is still being created.
After registering for SOAR, you will receive a confirmation email to your personal email account with more information on completing online orientation. Once you have completed online orientation you will be contacted to schedule your academic advising appointment.

Spring 2026 SOARs are virtual experiences
- Orientation - Your SOAR Event Confirmation email included a link to a SOAR Pre-Registration Survey. Please complete the SOAR Pre-Registration Survey to ensure a smooth advising and registration process.
- Advising - Once you have completed the SOAR Pre-Registration Survey, you will be contacted by a member of our advising team within 2-3 business days to schedule a time with you to discuss course recommendations and registration.
- If you have not heard from an advisor three business days after completing the SOAR Pre-Registration Survey, please text our First Year Programs office at 218.304.7544, and they will assist you.
- Registration - Your advisor will assist you in knowing how to register for the courses they recommend. Video tutorials on how to register for classes can also be found on the Registrar's page.
